Kyle Fisher's Impression of a Deer in Headlights

Hello readers, my name is Kyle Fisher and I am the new Fall intern here at Department Zero.  I am a recent graduate of The University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies and a minor in Film and Media Studies.  After my four years at KU I knew that creative marketing is where I wanted to land; but as a starry eyed recent grad I wasn't real sure how to make that happen.  I had just started really focusing on my job hunt when I came across an internship being offered by Department Zero.  I jumped at the opportunity; an internship is exactly what I needed to get my foot in the door of the industry and would give me a chance to learn as much as I possibly could. After bombarding them with emails and a nervous interview I was welcomed onto the Department Zero team.

Having now gotten the internship, I had to prepare myself to be thrown into an agency's workspace for the first time.  After a very long shopping trip with one too many clerks laughing at my fashion cluelessness, and YouTubing how to make/order coffee (having never had a cup or stepped foot in a Starbucks) I was ready and eager to start.  Turns out that would not be the kind of intern work I would end up doing. 

They threw me right in the middle of things, creating presentations, sitting in on client meetings and conference calls, answering phones. There was no time to make coffee or run errands; there was barely enough time to have orientation.  I have been here for a little less than a month now and things are starting to slow down as I get the hang of it.  I have already learned so much and am lucky to get some hands on experience in the experiential marketing and brand activation process.  I look forward to seeing what else this internship has in store for me.  It’s a unique opportunity that Department Zero provides allowing me to not only learn new skills but also apply them; I can't wait to start my next project, creating my own experiential campaign.
